Cape Maclear

Cape Maclear offers a beautiful shore line, with golden sands and tranquil waters, inviting to all. Cape Maclear or Chembe as its locally known is a town situated in the Mangochi District of Southern Malawi. Declared a national park in 1980, creating the Lake Malawi National Park, the first freshwater national park in the world.

The Cape is a leading tourist destination and is the busiest resort on Lake Malawi. The area is popular with families, backpackers, as well as, city dwellers looking for an escape for the weekend. There are a host of activities to keep you entertained at Cape Maclear including snorkelling, hiking, fishing, boat cruises, diving and kayaking. Or, you can pull up a sun lounger, kick back and bask in the glorious sunshine. There is something for everyone.

Lake Malawi National Park

Lake Malawi is one of the deepest lakes in the world. The property is an area of exceptional natural beauty with the rugged landscapes around it contrasting with the remarkably clear waters of the lake. The lake is home to hundreds of Cichlid ‘mbuna’ fish, nearly all of which are endemic to Lake Malawi. The national park isn’t constrained to the water, the park includes a land area around the cape and bay. Here you can find baboons, antelope and hyrax. Birdlife includes fish eagles, cormorants and hamerkops.

Most activities are done in or around the lake, here you can partake in a number of activities, such as:

  •  Fishing: Lake Malawi has vast numbers of species that are sportingly catchable including, Kampango, uncommon tsuhwa, mcheni, chambo and mlamba, a species list can be provided by guides.
  • Boat cruise: Discover the beauty of Lake Malawi National Park in a truly rewarding experience, with its breath-taking scenery, colourful fish and tranquil waters a boat cruise is a magical experience. Take it during sunset, and enjoy some sundowners.
  • Canoeing: Get a taste for local life and hire a dugout canoe.

Activities aren’t exclusive to the lake, there are many great hikes around Cape Maclear. This presents the opportunity to see the Cape from above, a truly beautiful sight. Guided mountain biking is also a popular past-time, see Cape Maclear face to face with this healthy option, it’s a tour, not a race so you can cruise at your own pace.

To get a further feel for local life take in a village walk and homestead visit; cook and dance with the local families.
