Zomba

Zomba was the first capital of Malawi and remained so until 1974, when Lilongwe became the capital. Although the capital changed, parliament stayed in Zomba until 1994. As well as being the first capital of Malawi, Zomba was also the capital of first British Central Africa and Nyasaland. The presence of the British can be found throughout the city, most notably in British colonial architecture of older buildings and homes.

Today, the main attraction to Zomba is the Zomba Plateau. Zomba offers many other activities to keep you busy, such as; rock climbing, horse riding, bird watching, mountain biking and fishing.

Zomba Plateau/Zomba Massif

The Zomba Plateau is a spectacular sight, described in colonial times as “the best in the British Empire”. As well as providing breath-taking scenery, the Plateau is home to an abundance of wildlife including leopards (rarely seen), giant butterflies, baboons, the long-crested eagle and the augur buzzard. The Zomba Massif is a mountain situated in the shire highlands. The peak of the mountain is 2,087 metres high. In total it occupies an area of approximately 130 square km. On clear days, Blantyre and Mt. Mulanje can be seen from the western edge of the Plateau.
